Mid-Century Modern Makeover
When Sunil and Neha purchased a mid-century split-level in Brookline, MA, the location was perfect. Everything else needed work. The home was small, dark, and full of asbestos, but it also had potential. So much so, that it became the subject of This Old House’s 40th season. With expert help from the Silva Brothers and TOH host Kevin O’Connor, Sunil and Neha tackled two additions, upgraded all their interior finishes, and added a whole new facade.
The open-concept floor plan feels extra spacious with over-sized porcelain tile floors, 14-foot ceilings, and expansive windows (outfitted with an R Series Shading System).
Living areas feature sheer and translucent shades that minimize solar heat gain and glare without blocking all light. Sunil and Neha selected Kenya Beige fabric for the living room, Kenya Terracotta for the loft, and Planet Grey for the Kitchen. Bedrooms feature room-darkening, privacy fabric. Coupler brackets were used for adjoining windows, complementing architecture by allowing shades to break over each window mullion. Each set of coupled shades is powered by a single motor, and ultra-quiet Smart Motors were used throughout the home so that all shades can be controlled via automation system.
